keep ’em coming back for more

Ah yes, it’s Friday again. I’ll bet you’re ready for a cocktail. I found this punch recipe last summer in New York Magazine and it was a huge hit at ladies’ night. I mean, I couldn’t make them fast enough! So I was happy to have the occasion to serve this again. The key ingredient, St-Germain liqueur, is made from the blossoms of elderberry flowers, and has been all the rage among top mixologists. It is musky and floral, but not too perfumey, and a perfect partner to Prosecco, Champagne, or any other sparkling wine. Muddled blackberries are sweet, a little tart, and add unusual texture to the drink; fresh lime juice adds a citrus kick. This is a perfect summer punch. Whip up a pitcher to impress your friends–equally stunning for a backyard BBQ or a really special celebration.

ElderBerry Smash

Best to make this drink by the pitcherful–and be prepared to make refills. This cocktail is loved by all! Place the fresh blackberries in the bottom of the pitcher and muddle to a fine pulp. I use a potato masher for this task and it works perfectly.

Add the juice of 4 limes and the St-Germain liqueur and mix into the blackberry pulp.

Pour over a bottle of Prosecco and give a quick stir. Cavi or Champagne works well here too.

Serve straight up in flutes, garnish with mint if you like. The original recipe calls for this punch to be served on ice, but I prefer it just slightly chilled. Be sure to have plenty of back-up–I’m not kidding, they’ll be begging for more…
