9 days and counting

Wow. We’ve had no power. For nine days and counting. Thankfully, we do have hot water (thanks to a gas powered water heater) and a bit of heat from a gas fireplace in our family room. That’s a lot more than a lot of other people in the same situation as us, or worse, so no complaints here. We’re dealing.

The devastation Sandy wrought took an unbelievable toll on our cozy little corner of suburbia. Trees came down everywhere. Beautiful old maples and oaks that have shaded our streets for decades. Losing a tree is one of the saddest things to me.

Electric poles were literally snapped in half and power lines lay strewn across pavement and street, like ominous serpents.

One neighbor’s tree fell smack across her front lawn, just narrowly missing her home;

a couple of other neighbors had damage to or completely lost their garages.

A beautiful house down the street was completely destroyed when a tree came crashing through the roof of their master bedroom. Thank goodness, that family was sleeping in their basement.

In our own backyard, a 75 foot pine listed to one side, but was fortunately cradled between the limbs of our neighboring maple, instead of landing on our house.

As badly as we were hit, we were not as devastated as many towns to our south, closer to the coast. I want to send all my heartfelt wishes for a quick and safe recovery for those many hard hit areas. We’re resilient, we will rebuild. I hope to be back soon with lots of delicious and comforting recipes and food stories to share with you. Until then, stay warm, my friends.
